Listed below are the expectations for participants in the Rheumatology
fellow at SMH as applied to clinics, education and call schedules.
It should be seen as guideline for your activities while at
SMH, recognizing that you have additional educational activities
that require you presence of off site.
1.
To attend ambulatory
clinics as per schedule below. There are two additional specialty
clinics (*) that will require special arrangement- Dr. Shupak’s
monthly Hemophilia clinic (1st Tues am of each month) and the
Myositis clinic (1st Wednesday pm of each month)
2.
You are expected to follow
up specific patients you have seen in clinic as per your discussion
with the attending staff – eg lab data, X rays. Patients
can be booked to follow up with you in the specific clinic where
indicated and agreed with the staff.
3.
To attend at least one
in patient consult round per week. This will give you an opportunity
to participate in the discussion of complex in-patient cases.
You are expected to provide input, and follow up (eg literature search) specific
topics if raised. These can be reviewed at the next round, or briefly in other
forums such as the Tues seminar or with staff on an individual basis. While
not responsible for the in patient consults, the breadth of case material and
complexity is an excellent opportunity to add to you knowledge base and educate
trainees and staff alike
4.
To present at least three
seminars/rounds at SMH during the three month rotation period.
At the beginning of the rotation, a schedule will be determined.
5.
To attend the Infusion Centre patients each Friday am as described
below.
6.
To complete a case or short report during the rotation suitable
for publication, presentation at a regional or local meeting.
7.
To attend all SMH Rheum specific rounds unless a conflict
with teaching exists.
8. One weekend call
(Friday 5 pm until Monday 9 am) per month (out of hospital).

2. In Patient Consultation only when PGYs not available
3. On-Call : one weekend per month with staff (to be arranged at the beginning of your rotation)
4. Remicade Rds
(Fri am) - to familiarize with protocol on chart - included
responsibility to follow up any adverse events, ordering appropriate
lab, Xray as needed, and determining the interval for the
next visit (in consultation with staff). A short note should
be dictated on every patient to the attention of the referring
rheumatologist and cc to Family MD.
5. The fellow is to schedule at least two sessions per month
with Dr. Dawn Pearce, Radiology. Ortho clinics can be arranged
with Dr. Tim Daniels (Foot and Ankle), Shoulder with Michael
McKee, Knee/Hip with Drs. Emil Schemitsch or J. Wadell, Arthritic
with Dr. Earl Bogoch. The staff are aware that you will be contacting
them, but we are happy to introduce you directly
6. Clinical
Assessment (PDF, Word) form should be used for patient assessments.
B) Education at SMH
1. Rheumatology rounds – every Tues 12-1pm (lunch provided)
in the MFC except the 2nd

Rheum-Radiology rounds (location TBA)
2. Combined MSK
Rds monthly 7:45 am in the Small Shuter Auditorium
3. Journal Club
TWH 8-9 Thurs as per schedule
4. Intercity rds HSC every other Tues as per schedule
5. Weekly inpatient
rounds- tues pm and Friday am-attendance at least one round
per week
6. Medical Grand
Rounds (as per schedule)-12-1 pm Weds
7. Metabolic Bone
Clinic rounds - Mon noon weekly 61 Queen Street after MB Clinic
(lunch provided)
C) Fellow Educational rounds - Core
In addition to the above SMH educational activities, there
are core requirements for every rheum fellow. These are off
site, (you will be provided with a schedule) which means that
clinic bookings will require adjustment in some cases.
